Mobilising for a Water Secure Mediterranean

About us

The vision of Global Water Partnership - Mediterranean (GWP-Med) is a water-secure Mediterranean. It promotes action, demo application and knowledge exchange on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and sustainable use of water resources in the region along the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus approach. GWP-Med facilitates a multi-stakeholder platform that brings together 10 major regional networks of different water disciplines (government, river basins, local authorities, professionals, NGOs, research institutes, irrigators, etc) and over 80 other institutions and organisations from non-EU countries and EU countries. Working at regional, national, local and transboundary level, GWP-Med provides technical support to policy making; facilitates dialogue on water security and IWRM issues; and, implements demonstration actions. Themes addressed include a range of aspects of governance for IWRM; water financing including private sector participation; adaptation to climate vulnerability and change; river basin/transboundary water management; joint IWRM/Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) planning; non-conventional water resources management; stakeholder participation; communication, education and capacity building; and, networking of targeted groups including decision makers, parliamentarians and the media. It has a long track record of collaboration with the private sector for the implementation of corporate water replenishment projects, according to the Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting methodology. Furthermore, GWP-Med addresses gender, equity, youth and poverty as cross-cutting issues.

  • 🤝Drin Cooperation goes to another level, contributing to our Network's #SustainableAction through 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 #𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌊In 2024, Implementation began of a USD7.1 million project funded by the Global Environment Facility focused on implementing the Strategic Action Programme of the #Drin Basin, enhancing transboundary cooperation and integrated natural resources management in the Central and Eastern European basin. GWPO played a supporting role in this process. We are very proud of our role in supporting the Drin Riparians in the implementation of their vision: "to promote joint action for the coordinated integrated management of the shared water resources in the Drin Basin, as a means to safeguard and restore to the extent possible the ecosystems and the services they provide, and to promote sustainable development across the Drin Basin” For those who haven't explored this year's Global Water Partnership 2024 Annual Report, check out the Drin story and many more key highlights under GWPO's anchor area 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in👉 https://bit.ly/4lQtrlC

  • 🌊 From Source to Sea: A New Vision for Damour’s River Basin 🇱🇧🌍 In Lebanon’s Damour region, a groundbreaking step is being taken toward holistic natural resource management — one that could become a model for the entire Mediterranean. 💧Led by Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean (GWP-Med) under the Global Environment Facility UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention/MAP MedProgramme, the Integrated Management Plan (IMP) for the Damour River Basin is redefining how we think about water. Instead of managing parts in isolation, this plan sees land, water, coast, estuary, and sea as one connected system — applying the Source-to-Sea approach. The Damour River supports agriculture, tourism, and local industry — but faces growing pressure from upstream overuse and water scarcity. With no clear water allocation laws, tensions are rising between communities. Climate impacts are only increasing. 🔍 What’s being done: ✔ A full governance and environmental analysis across 166 municipalities ✔ Policy, technical, and management solutions tailored to local needs ✔ A decision-support Water Evaluation & Planning (WEAP) system ✔ A collaborative roadmap for sustainable development 💡 The goal? Secure water, stronger governance, climate resilience, and thriving communities — from the mountains to the Mediterranean. This is integrated water management in action — and a bold step for Lebanon’s environmental future. More👉https://lnkd.in/dYUP8Rz7

  • 🚀📝A fantastic summer read! Check out the latest Global Water Partnership in Action Annual Report and find out our network's impactful work in mobilising investments, advancing governance reforms, and strengthening cooperation at scale. Highlights from our work in the Mediterranean include customised interventions carefully designed to tackle specific needs and respond to real problems that we designed and implemented together with the private sector, local authorities and long-standing partners throughout the Mediterranean. Namely: ♦️ a public-private synergy in Thessaly 🇬🇷 building resilience against extreme weather events for a region that was severely hit by floods ♦️a practical smart irrigation intervention with significant benefits for a farming community in Tunisia ♦️a water efficiency project for in a coastal city in Greece, that faces water stress and water quality issues. • 🌊 Strengthening Sustainability in the Mediterranean 🌍 The Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD) held its pivotal meeting on 24-26 June 2025 in Greece, focusing on shaping the updated Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD) 2025–2035. 💡Mr. Tassos Krommydas Senior Programme Officer Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean (GWP-Med)-Med, presented the draft WEFE Nexus Strategy in the Mediterranean Source-to-Sea Continuum, a Flagship Initiative under the MSSD, that has been developed in the framework of the Global Environment Facility UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention MedProgramme and under the auspices of UNEP/MAP, the Union for the Mediterranean and the European Commission. The draft Strategy directly supports the MSSD objectives and is directly related to the Barcelona Convention Protocols, primarily the ones on Land-Based Sources of pollution (LBS) and on Integrated Coastal Zones Management (ICZM). Mr. Krommydas also highlighted the value and importance of the upcoming Barcelona Convention COP not only in endorsing the Strategy but also in mandating partners to develop a Framework of Actions to operationalize the Strategy. He also provided input on water-related targets and indicators essential in the updating of the MSSD. More about our work in the MedProgramme 👉https://lnkd.in/dMN-QXWP
